 DIY Wood Projects

A great thing about DIY home decor is that there’s an infinite number of ways to look at it and many different ways to be creative and original.

That being said, let’s check out some awesome DIY wood projects and see what inspires us.

Types of Wood for Wood Projects

Types of Wood for Wood Projects

As you can imagine, wood is not easy to work with, which makes certain varieties better if you’re looking to start work on a wood project.

Pine

Pine is a softwood species that is quite easy to work with. You can carve it and drill through it without too many headaches. Pine is typically a pale-yellow color that instantly brightens any interior.

After it has been treated, pinewood is quite easy to dye if desired. Many woodworkers, on the other hand, merely seal the wood and apply a transparent finish.

Cherry

Cherry is a significantly more challenging timber to deal with. It is, nevertheless, a softer hardwood. It has a slightly warmer crimson tone that works well with lighter interiors.

Redwood

Redwood is also extremely resistant to dampness, which makes it an excellent choice for outdoor furniture. It is pretty soft compared to other types of wood, so it’s easy to work with. It is slightly reddish in color.

While redwood may be stained and painted, the color is so appealing that many woodworkers employ a water repellant with mildewcide if you plan to use it to make outdoor furniture.

Cedar

Cedar is another easy-to-work-with softwood. It has become very popular thanks to its warm, red hues and enticing perfume. Additionally, it is extremely resistant to the elements. As a result, it is a fantastic choice for outdoor furniture. Moths are naturally repelled by the wood.

Maple

Maple can also be easy to work with, as long as you choose the softer and not the harder variety. If you’re just starting your woodworking journey, you definitely want to avoid the harder variety until you get used to it. Because of its durable and stable nature, maple is often used to make furniture pieces.

Best Glue for Wood Projects

Best Glue for Wood Projects

When choosing the best glue for wood projects, we have to keep in mind the following aspects:

  • Adhesive strength is important because not all products are created alike. PVA glue is good for priming and CA glue can hold your pieces together until the PVA glue dries.
  • Dry time differs from one glue type to another. Polyurethane cures take a few hours to dry, while PVA glue takes about 24 hours to cure.
  • Viscosity determines what the glue will be good for. Since CA glue is thin, it’s great for making small repairs. The thick and runny nature of PVA glue makes it better for joint assemblies.
  • Color is important in certain situations. Some glues will not sand well, while others have colors that match the wood or stain in question.

That being said, some of the best glues for wood projects include:

  • Polyurethane is great for applications such as wood floor finishes. Franklin 2303 Titebond Polyurethane Glue is a great choice.
  • Cyanoacrylate (CA for short) is good for making temporary bonds, especially at room temperature. Starbond EM-02 is worth considering if you need CA glue.
  • PVA (Polyvinyl Acetate) glue is very versatile and can be used for anything from wood bonds to outdoor applications. Gorilla 6206005 is one of the best out there.

What Are Common Wood Joints?

most common wood joints

Miter joint

A miter joint is the joining of two parts that have been cut at an angle, at a corner. As is customary for pictures and painting frames, the ends of the two wood pieces are cut at a 45-degree angle and nailed together to make the frame’s corner. Angles, on the other hand, can and do fluctuate.

In principle, a miter joint is similar to a butt joint that has been bisected. If you examine a picture frame that incorporates one, you will notice a miter junction at each corner. The joint comes to a point.

Rabbet joint

A rabbet is a channel or a lip that is cut from the workpiece’s edge. A typical rabbet joint is characterized by the end grain of a second piece being set into the rabbet of the first. These joints are most commonly used to recess cabinet backs.

Butt joint

A butt joint is the simplest to construct, needing little shaping beyond the cuts necessary to measure the workpiece. However, as with any connection, the surfaces to be connected must fit snugly together.

Finger joint

Often used as drawer joinery, this particular joint type uses rectangular fingers which are cut into the end grain of drawer ends and sides. These joints need 90-degree cuts which you can make by hand or by using a router.

Dovetail joint

The dovetail joint is one of the strongest wood couplings available, but it poses a high level of difficulty, requiring meticulous arrangement and a significant amount of cutting and fitting work. Dovetails have historically been used to join drawer ends and sides, as well as a variety of other types of casework furniture.

Tongue-and-groove joint

To produce a bigger panel, tongue and groove joinery connects two wood pieces at the edges. One side utilizes a slot that runs the length of the wood, while the other side utilizes an extension to fit into that space. This combination results in a strong and clean joint that is ideal for use with tables, panels, and other surfaces that are flat.

Mortise-and-tenon joint

The mortise is the slot/hole used to insert a projecting tenon. These joints are most frequently rectilinear in shape, however round tenons and corresponding mortises are also found.

Although mortise-and-tenon joints are more difficult to form than other, simpler joints (both components require extensive shaping), the outcome is significantly stronger.

Basic Tools for Woodworking

Basic Tools for Woodworking

Numerous new woodworkers are daunted by the dizzying array of tools currently available for purchase. You can easily accumulate thousands of dollars’ worth of high-end woodworking tools in your shop.

However, the majority of tools for beginning woodworkers do not have to be elaborate or expensive. Beginners’ woodworking equipment should begin with the fundamentals in order to develop the sense of simplicity that is at the heart of great work.

Circular saw

If there is one power-activated saw that every beginner’s toolbox should contain, it is a circular saw. There are an infinite number of brands available, but they all share one characteristic.

That is a round or round blade with sharp teeth that rips into wood. Although circular saws come in a variety of power levels, they are all electric. The majority are corded equipment that run on household power, however cordless circular saws have made significant advancements.

Circular saws, according to some, are better suited to crude carpentry than to fine woodworking. That is not true. Circular saws cut straight, crisp lines. A great deal is dependent on the blade you use.

Jigsaw

A good jigsaw is essential for any starting woodworker. They are sometimes referred to as saber saws because of the reciprocating blade that resembles a saber. Powered by electricity, these tools are designed to create precise cuts in straight, curved, or serpentine directions.

Compound miter saw

Compound miter saws are an advancement over conventional circular saws. They continue to use circular saw blades for rip, crosscut, and combination cuts. They are, however, mounted on an arm or a track, similar to the radial arm saws they have nearly supplanted.

The most common blade diameters measure 10 and 12 inches, however compound miter saws may accommodate blades as small as 7 and a half inches. Always use a high-quality crosscut saw blade when using a miter saw.

Table saw

Early on in their careers, the majority of beginning woodworkers invest in a table saw. Table saws are capable of cutting in ways that other saw types are incapable of. They are constructed similarly to inverted circular saws, with the blade exposed from beneath the saw table or work area. Precision adjustment of blade angle and depth is simple.

Orbital sander

If you just purchase one electric tool for wood finishing, make it an orbital sander. These high-speed machines eliminate any strain associated with manual sanding and accomplish the job much more quickly. Orbital sanders are not interchangeable with inline instruments such as belt sanders. They employ circular or orbital sandpaper pads.

Ordinary orbital sanders spin a circular disk of abrasive sandpaper in a circle. While they remove material quickly, they often leave difficult-to-remove swirl imprints.

The best purchase is a random orbital sander. They are inert. Rather than that, they vibrate randomly, leaving the wood smooth and devoid of marks.

Density of Wood Matters

The density of wood refers solely to the solid substance of the wood, not to the air and water contained inside the wood structure. The density of wood, or its specific gravity, is expressed in kilograms per cubic meter and varies amongst wood species.

You can already predict how a type of wood will behave in your woodworking project based on its density. This is a critical characteristic for furniture construction. There are two primary mechanical qualities that are significant: stiffness and strength.

Increased density results in an increase in the hardness, strength, and stiffness of sawn timber, according to research.

Because the primary function of furniture is to sustain a weight, it is critical to select the appropriate wood that possesses the necessary stiffness and strength to execute this function, whether it is supporting a person or a big load of books.

Types of Engineered Wood

Engineered Wood

  • Laminated veneer lumber – LVL is made of compressed wood veneers, plus glues and resins. It is used in framing. Although LVL is extremely robust, it only has one strength axis due to the stacking of veneers with the grain running in the same direction. This means that LVL can only be loaded in a single direction.
  • Laminated strand lumber – LSL is highly dense and contains 95 percent wood fiber and five percent resin. LSL is made using small wooden strips that are placed in an angled pattern.
  • Oriented strand board – This engineered wood type is made using flakes and wood strands that are combined with adhesives. They are later compressed and made to look like large mats, making them great for flooring applications.
  • Plywood– offer a number of advantages to builders, as they are created by bonding wood fiber sheets and resin to create a composite material with dimensional stability and constant strength in all directions.
  • MDF – is created by pulverizing softwood and hardwood pieces into fibers, which are then mixed with resin binders and wax, and molded into panels using extreme heat and pressure.
  • Composite board – This is a type of engineered wood that contains both plastic and wood fibers and has been extruded and heated. It is simple to install, economical, and ideal for incorporating into sustainable design, as it can be created from recycled materials and requires fewer trees to produce.
  • Cross-laminated timber – This wood panel product is created by gluing layers of solid sawn lumber together. It is reinforced by laying each board perpendicular to the previous one and gluing the wide faces of each board together. Due to the fact that it is constructed of numerous layers of wood, it can act as an excellent insulator.

Types of Wood Finishes

Types of Wood Finishes

Wood dyes

A wood dye is made up of two components: a solvent and a dye.  Consequently, we can create a colored solution by adding various colors to a solvent such as water or alcohol. Wood dyeing is similar to the process we use to color fabric and other materials.

Wood stains

A wood stain is created by dispersing big, insoluble particles in solvents such as oils or water. The wood stain brings out the natural color of the wood. Additionally, it aids in blending the surface color into a continuous shade when color discrepancies exist.

Varnish

Varnish is great for finishing wood because it is strong and durable. Varnish comes in a variety of sheens, from translucent to satin to glossy. Although varnish is based on oil, it also contains synthetic resins such as alkyd or urethane.

Wax

Generally, we think of wax as a transient finish. We utilize wax to provide a protective coating on top of an existing finish. For instance, those of you that have a varnished wooden floor which is dried and cured, can freely apply wax to it.

Wood preserver

While this does not enhance the beauty of the wood, it does provide protection. Additionally, wood preservers are available in a variety of hues and finishes. People use wood preservers to protect the timber from termites. Additionally, you can purchase various types of wood preservers for interior and exterior use.

Woodworking Myths

Woodworking Myths

You need a lot of free space to start woodworking.

This assertion and assumption are extremely broad and sweeping. If you intend to establish a huge operation cabinet business, then certainly, you will require a sizable shop. However, for the average hobbyist, a large room is not necessary as long as you make the most of what you have.

DIY products are cheaper than store-bought products.

This is frequently a mistake. A DIY woodworking project isn’t just the cost of the materials needed to see it through. It’s also about the invaluable time and effort you put into a project and the cost of the tools needed for the project.

Sometimes, if you do all the math, it could be more profitable to purchase a nightstand rather than making one by yourself.

The best wood is in big box stores.

While big box stores are often the handiest source of wood, they are not the best choice. If you’ve ever combed through a stack of lumber in a store, you’ll immediately discover that it takes a long time to select somewhat straight pieces of wood for your woodworking project.

Oil-based stains are better.

This is more likely to fall under the heading of personal opinions than myths. Both oil and water-based stains will perform very well and, like anything else, each has its own set of advantages. However, making a general assumption that oil stains are always preferable to water stains is not realistic.

Dust is not a problem if you woodwork as a hobby.

This is a pernicious urban legend. Has cutting wood for a project ever led to your nose itching or you couldn’t stop sneezing later in the day? This is a sign of a temporary effect of dust exposure. Prolonged exposure to sawdust has been linked to a variety of nasal and lung malignancies.
