Materials:

  • Boiling water
  • Dish soap
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Salt
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Coca-cola
  • Plunger
  • Wire coat hanger
  • Duct tape

Directions:

Boiling water and dish soap

This is the simplest and least expensive method that you can do. Simply bring 2L of water to a boil, then add a couple of teaspoons of liquid dish soap. Take this mixture and carefully pour it down the drain, this method works especially great on grease clogs because it warms the grease back to liquid. It may take a few tries to see the full effect, also remember that boiling water can cause damage to plastic pipes.

Baking soda and vinegar

Mix 1/3 cup of baking soda and 1/3 cup of vinegar, then pour it down the drain. The fizzing action is what makes this method so effective in removing the grime that’s clogging your drain, for best results allow it to sit for about an hour before flushing with hot water.

Baking soda and salt

This method is also excellent against foul drain odors. Simply mix half a cup of baking soda and salt, then pour the mixture down the drain, let it sit for a few hours, and follow it with a pot of hot water. This produces a strong chemical reaction that has the potential to clear blockages.

Hydrogen peroxide with baking soda

Simply mix 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide with a spoonful of baking soda, then pour this mixture down the drain, when you see fizz it means it’s working.

Coca-cola

Regular coca-cola is the best for this method because you need it as harsh as possible. All you have to do is gently pour it into the drain, then let it sit for a few hours. This will dissolve the clog quickly, then after a few hours, flush it with hot water.

Plunger

There are 2 types of plunger but use a cup plunger for the sink. Then, if the drain is completely clogged, remove the drain stopper and fill the sink with enough water to cover the plunger’s suction, proceed to plunge it using the same motions as you would with a toilet.

Wire coat hanger

If a plunger doesn’t work, do this DIY version instead. Simply straighten the wire hanger except for the hook, then wrap the end with duct tape to keep it from scratching the pipe, have a pail or garbage bag ready for disposing of extraction. Insert the hook end into your pipe and gently fish the clog out with the hook. This method is very effective in removing obstructions caused by hair or food particles when finished pouring water down the drain.

Remove and clean the drain trap

Clogs usually form in the drain trap which is typically located beneath the sink inside the cabinet. First, clear the area and place a bucket underneath the drain to capture any water or debris that may fall out. Then, carefully remove the p-trap from the drainpipe and clear out anything that’s been lodged in it, reattach the p-trap and run some hot water through the pipes for a few minutes to complete the process, once the drain is clear make sure you’re taking precautions to avoid blockages from recurring.
